Getting out of bed can be tough. Getting out of bed with the right attitude can be even harder.
Although I’m generally a pretty positive person, I’m not the best version of myself in the morning (being more of a creature of the night). But your morning mindset can influence the rest of your day so it’s important to start your day right. For some people this means eating a healthy breakfast and for others it’s about starting with exercise. But if you’re struggling to achieve either of these in the morning, there’s another really simple way to kick start your day and create a positive and happy vibe. It’s called music (heard of it? J) and it has the power to move your subconscious and influence your mood.
The experts all agree
There have been numerous studies linking the power of music to the ability to provide therapy, reduce pain and loneliness and generally improve people’s mood and health. A quick online search will take you through some well documented evidence and examples. For instance, a study by the University of Missouri, “Trying to Be Happier Really Can Work: Two Experimental Studies” looked into whether the use of upbeat music can have an effect on our well-being. The findings, published in The Journal of Positive Psychology in 2013, discovered that people who listened to happy and upbeat music were successful in raising positive mood levels.
Music makes us want to move
Music elicits an emotional response so it makes sense that happy music can help us feel more up beat. So why not make the most of a melody or two? Music inspires us to move so while you may not have the time or inclination to start your day with a jog or gym session, who can resist a quick dance around the kitchen to a favourite tune?
Maybe you like to wake up feeling pumped or motivated at the break of dawn or perhaps something more calming or spiritual is your thing? It doesn’t matter what you choose as long as it speaks to your soul and puts you in a happy place.
Play it loud and proud
Forget the headphones – providing the rest of your household agrees – share your music with your family and friends and get everyone around you feeling good too. Or take turns at being the morning DJ and find out what songs make others feel happy – you might discover some new favourites.
It’s easy to start
Forget about checking in online; looking at your emails or scrolling through social media. Forget what’s going on with others and the world for just a moment – that can all wait. Line up a few songs to play next time you rise and shine then listen to the rhythm and get ready to start your beautiful day.
I like something upbeat in the morning so here just a few obvious feel good options to start with. What are your favourites?
