Welcome to the Film Club

The Film Club

( in development and coming soon )
Inspired by Film?

What films inspire you and why?

This film club is to get us thinking about how film inspires us.  Films are stories enhanced by the visual quality of the story being told in pictures and words.  Films have always inspired me, made me think about what they mean and talk to others to explore meaning.  I studied English at University and I suppose there my love of stories began.

I have written some in-depth reviews of films written with positive psychology in mind and also thinking about what inspired me about the films.

Stories can be powerful and they can inspire people to change or take action.   I think we relate our own journeys to the stories that we watch or read and I think it for me, films and books inspire me on my own journey through life.

Watching films with Positive Psychology in mind has changed the way I watch films.  I am actively seeking for what inspires me and the meaning beneath the film, and this in turn is making me feel more positively generally and seeking positive change in myself.  I usually watch horror so the type of films I am choosing are more slow in pace and I have to make more effort to watch them but in the end finding them more rewarding.  For instance the Imitation Game reminded me to seek strength in others even if they appear strange to me at first.  The Secret Life of Walter Mitty reminded me to seek adventure, use imagination and look for symbols in your life.   I’m also finding when you look for something positive and inspiring you usually find it, so I’m starting to think there may be Positive Psychology in all films, even horror!  Stories usually have someone you are rooting for and a challenge and often a plot means that the protagonist has some positive qualities people draw on to overcome these challenges.

I hope you enjoy the film club.  The idea is that I will do some in-depth reviews on here and we’ll share some links to films that align to ideas of Positive Psychology (e.g. happiness, inspiration, strength, kindness, gratitude, resilience).  I am hoping the film club appeals to people who know about the field of Positive Psychology and those who do not, because the essence of it is how film inspires us and I think most people can relate to that.

Also we are hoping that people get involved and discuss films and also propose film links we can put on and say how and why they inspire you?

We shall be creating a “Film Club” forum shortly and also putting in place a process that will allow you to make comments and recommend films that you found inspiring.
